  • Palm sander and pads
  • Chip brush
  • Safety gear
  • Drop cloths
  • Sandpaper or sanding block
  • Acetone
  • Tack cloth

 

Steps: Scrape With a Wire Brush:

  • Remove loose rust with a wire brush.
  • Gently scrub off big pieces.
  • Sand Off Remaining Rust:
  • Use a palm sander with 80- to 100-grit sandpaper.
  • Hand-sand crevices and curves with 150-grit sandpaper.

 

  • Clean With Solvent: Wipe the surface with acetone to ensure it's clean.
  • Apply Primer: Use a rust-preventive spray primer. Apply two to three light coats, allowing drying between each.
  • Spray on Paint: Use outdoor oil-based spray paint. Apply two to three light coats, allowing drying between each.
  • Fix Drips: If there are drips, lightly drag a clean chip brush over the area.
  • Protect With Sealer: Apply a clear oil-based urethane as a protective clear coat.
  • Apply two coats, sanding between with 200-grit sandpaper.
  • Let Dry: Allow the chair to cure for 24 hours before use. These steps will give your furniture a rust-free, repainted finish ready for outdoor use.
